Boring Buddhism

Road Kill 19

Quads burning like fire
And still no one rides no bike
The wheel spins and spins

Too tired to write much, but one more thought along the lines of yesterdays post.

Walking the path is harder than it appears at first, i think. While it may seem murderously hard to give up the trappings of a materialistic life and move to a simpler life of introspection and inquiry, it can be almost as difficult to keep yourself from swinging to the other extreme once that move has been made.

For a long time, even as you walk the path, there is still a sense of 'I,' 'someone' who is 'walking' 'the path.' And because this path leads to that mystical place called enlightenment and that magical thing called nirvana, everything is an adventure. The path is a journey of discovery, seeking new states of mind, new identities, new rules to live by.

But the truth, as i said yesterday, is in that boring flatland lying between these two views. That place with nothing to see, nothing to do, no definition, and nothing to find. And this is hard to see because there is still that piece of ego firmly entrenched inside who is telling us that it has to be more than that; there has to be something i can find and define.

When i talk about giving up the search, surrendering, and giving up the chase for answers, i mean exactly that. Giving up. Surrendering. That doesn't mean giving up, but keeping a small portion of your mind working to study the current situation in order to find how it works. That doesn't mean surrendering, but keeping a small portion of your mind working to find a possible escape route. This means no more and no less than giving up. Surrendering.

Sit on your zafu and let yourself melt into all of reality as it is. Don't think about it, don't analyze it, don't try and define it, but know that as you sit there reality, all that is and all that isn't, what is before is and isn't, ... that reality is manifesting as that body you call yours on the cushion you call yours, in this time called now and that place called here. Reality is manifesting. Period.

Thoughts may come and go, but that has no bearing on what you are doing. Let them come and go without dwelling on them. Sensations may come and go. Let them come and go. Perceptions may come and go. Let them come and go. That is all part of reality. You are reality. Sitting is reality. Your zafu is reality. Everything and nothing is reality.

This path isn't about discovery and adventure, it's about letting go of discovery and adventure just as it is about letting go of me, mine, and all those things i used to define myself with. The path is about coming to understand that even though no one is riding no bike, my quads were killing me on the final couple of hills today. The path is about coming to understand that while reality is all there is when sitting on my zafu, reality is all there is when i'm calling that jerk with the dog an asshole and losing my temper.

And this is exactly why i love the henro trail on Shikoku as much as i love the henro trail on a zafu. They may seem like different places but they aren't. Shikoku for me is a two month walking meditation retreat. It's a chance to give up my ordinary life and step into reality in its wholeness. It's a chance to give up adventure and discovery and step into reality in its oneness.

The henro trail is a chance to see each moment of the day as everything. To see everything as empty yet obviously there. To see existence from outside the normal confines of time. The henro trail, for me, is that boring place where i can Be, and no more. Where Being can manifest as me, one step and one breath at a time.

There's no room for emotion here, whether that's anger and pride or exhilaration awe.

Don't Know

Road Kill 18

I just don't know, eh
Of course that may surprise you
But not who you are

Same routine. Same old pair of running shoes. Same old Dave. Same search on the side of the same local roads. Same weather as yesterday — clear skies with the temperature in the upper 70s. Beautiful day to be out running, even if it didn't go all that well.

It may surprise you; that may be unclear. But who you are has no troubles with it. Because that's who you are. It and that are such simple words, and yet...

What's The Point?

Road Kill 17

'Tween each pedal stroke
Without choice where's up or down
Just here now, or not

Another spring. Another riding season. Another me. Another day's allotment to find the unfindable on the side of the local roads. Beautiful mid-70s sunny morning with typical spring winds, little traffic, rice balls and tea in the saddlebag, Dogen in my handlebar bag for a lunch companion, and a mind that was pleasantly and surprisingly quiet and still. It's hard to ask for more.

Got back from Shikoku just about two weeks ago. A film crew from London hired me to get them around parts of the henro trail for a TV documentary they are making. It will be a six part, six-hour series, with each program focusing on a different religious pilgrimage around the world. The obvious one's are the Hindu pilgrimage to Kumb Mela in India, the Muslem pilgrimage to Mecca, the Catholic pilgrimage to Lourdes in France, and for the Buddhists, they chose the henro trail on Shikoku. They are doing all the filming and editing this year and it will show on PBS in the US in 2014, next year. The title of the series will be Sacred Journeys, look for it on a PBS station near you.

It was somewhere between interesting and fascinating to watch a small group (the film crew) of non-Buddhists and non-henro try to make sense of the henro trail in just two short weeks. In the end, i think they got a lot of good material and will turn out a very nice introduction to what and where the henro trail is. Did they capture what the pilgrimage is, though? Did they capture what a true henro is attempting to accomplish while walking the trail? Did they film all the bits and pieces of a henro's life that he/she sheds and leaves along the sides of the road as they progress around the island? Did they find, and film, all the expectations and hopes that henro leave tied to tree branches here and there as they realize that they no longer serve a purpose and can be left for those still looking and hoping?

The henro trail is, on its best days, magnificently nothing, or, maybe phrased a little better, nothing in all its magnificence. Someone outside of the film crew asked me while there about meditation, or meditating while walking, or something along those lines. The question was something along the lines of why would anyone do that. To which i offered something like to figure out who you are? The response to that stunned me, even though i know it shouldn't have — What's the point of that? I didn't even know what to say so i let it drop and let the subject change naturally.

Why on earth would anyone do that? What is the point of spending time looking at who and what we are? What earthly purpose could any investigation into that magically mundane place called here and now serve? Could i push you to see It if we walked the henro trail together over two months? Would It be any clearer after than it was before? Without spending time, without going anywhere, could you lose your way for two months and 1,400 km? What's the point of That?

I'm hoping to walk the trail again in a couple of years. That gives me time to save up the rest of what i need. In the meantime, i'm back home and back in the saddle and running shoes.

Walk This Way

Road Kill 14

From where do you leave
Is there a place that you end
Walk always with this

A magnificently incredibly wonderful 6 mile run today under clear sunny skies with a temperature of 52 degrees! Amazing. Almost as close to perfection as they come. Beautiful day.

-----
On another note, my sister gave me one of those digital picture frames for Christmas and i immediately loaded it full of pictures from the henro trail. Anyone want to guess what percentage of my time is now spent staring at the wall?

All

I have unusual music listening habits while running, compared to most other runners, at least. Instead of the constant pounding, upbeat rock music, i frequently listen to slow, sappy love songs. The words are completely irrelevant, the sole purpose of any song is to give me something to focus on and let "me" get lost in the voices. Unless i'm doing hill work or tempo runs and intervals, which is only during the summer as i train for a marathon, my goal while running is to drop off everything and become nothing but moving feet. Sappy, Korean and Japanese love songs work perfectly for that. For me. :-)

Today's road kill popped up complete, with only one word change, about 2 miles from home, in the middle of this song. When i listen to this song, both Dave and Lao disappear inside her voice within the first few words. It's almost like magic.

Sipping Silence

Found the first two-thirds of this while running this morning but didn't know what to do with it as it was unfinished. Ran over the last line on the way back home while out on my bike this afternoon.

Unfinished Business

DHS 42/100

It was raining and the roads were icy when i ran today, so i decided to call it quits after 2 miles. Problem is, that left me with an unfinished Road Kill. The first 2/3 popped up on the way out to mile 1, but my mind got occupied with the argument on whether to turn around there and go back home or to gut it out and continue. I decided to turn it into a short 2 mile tempo run and go home, but the argument cut off the last line of the Road Kill. I wonder now how it would have ended had i stayed out for the 4 miles i had planned.....

Road Kill 7 (Unfinished)
It's true, you might say.
Show me proof, i might reply.
?????

As an aside, i am 13 miles short of running 1,000 miles this year. It should be easy to get that in before the 31st, but according to the weather forecast it is supposed to rain through the rest of the week. I'm not giving up, though. Even if i have to run long a few times next week, in the snow, around and around one single block because the roads are snowed in, i fully intend to log that 13 miles. I've only run 1,000 miles in a year once before, in 2004.

Get Your Butt Out Here!

DHS 20/100
(Did i really promise 100 consecutive days? Aigo, aigo, aigo,.... What was i thinking????)

Found this on the roadside about 3 mile from home.
Road Kill 6
Just this. One. Focus!
Was it like this way back when?
Run. Chase. Catch. Kill. Live.

After my run, i found an email from the library saying that my copy of Behold Your Life: A Pilgrimage Through Your Memories had come in so i walked down to pick it up after lunch. The book is a 40 day journey through your life with instructions to read only one chapter a day and reflect on that day's message and questions. I'll start that tomorrow and it's killing me not to look ahead and see what to expect. But, i'm going to stick to discipline and not look.

Where the questions are specifically Christian, i'll look at them from my non-Christian perspective. We'll see how that works out, given that i don't know what questions are going to come up. But, the journey is off to a good start as the instructions end with this quote from Rumi:

I called through your door,
"The mystics are gathering
in the street. Come out!"

"Leave me alone.
I'm sick."

"I don't care if you're dead!
Jesus is here, and he wants
to resurrect somebody."

:-) I love that.

Get out here!
   I'm sick, i told you.
I don't care if you're dead, i said get your butt out here. Didn't you hear who i am?
Go away, i'm in a bad mood.
Don't you understand who i am? I can take care of that. Get out here NOW!
   Just go away, please.
If i have to come in there, there will be Hell to pay.
You're funny. If you don't leave now, i'm going to call the cops.
...

Sometimes, even when the solutions appear at your door, we're too closed-minded to accept them, preferring to continue to suffer. Alone. What a waste, but an incredibly hard habit to break once you fall in that hole.

Who Cares?

[M]an's way to liberation and perfection lies through an increasing impersonality. It is his ancient and constant experience that the more he opens himself to the impersonal and infinite, to that which is pure and high and one and common in all things and beings, the impersonal and infinite in Nature, the impersonal and infinite in life, the impersonal and infinite in his own subjectivity, the less he is bound by his ego and by the circle of the finite, the more he feels a sense of largeness, peace, pure happiness. The pleasure, joy, satisfaction which the finite by itself can give, or the ego in its own right attain, is transitory, petty and insecure. To dwell entirely in the ego sense and its finite conceptions, powers, satisfactions is to find this world forever full of transience and suffering...

[T]he finite life is always troubled by a certain sense of vanity for this fundamental reason that the finite is not the whole or the highest truth of life; life is not entirely real until it opens into the sense of the infinite. ...

For the impersonal, the infinite, the One in which all the impermanent, mutable, multiple activity of the world finds above itself its base of permanence, security and peace, is the immobile Self. ... If we see this, we shall see that to raise one's consciousness and the poise of one's being out of limited personality into this infinite and impersonal Brahman is the first spiritual necessity. To see all beings in this one Self is the knowledge which raises the soul out of egoistic ignorance and its works and results; to live in it is to acquire peace and firm spiritual foundation.

Essays On The Gita

It's hard to explain
These things called life, age, and death
Then again, who cares?

That's the question, isn't it? Who cares? Who? What? No door prize for anyone that says "I do." :-(

More Road Kill

It must have been dangerous on the roads over the winter, i found more road kill on the shoulder of the road during today's run.

      You stupid jogger.
      Hold fast and it disappears.
      Let go it remains.

Let me try again.
Change clothes, lace shoes. out the door.
Just run the miles.

      Shit for brains you have.
Where did the miles come from?
      Just run. Now go sit.

Found these while running today...

Road Kill 1

Sometimes it's cloudy.
Sometimes the full moon shines bright.
Running helps you see.

      Words, words. All bullshit.
The moon. The clouds. Who sees what?
      Now tell me something.

Even runners know,
If you let go of the string
The kite flies away.
